The outdoor season is now in full swing and the last of the elite throwers have started their seasons.  That means it is time to start back up CollegeHammer.com's Athlete of the Week award and weekly rankings.  This week's athlete of the week is true freshman Lauren Chambers of USC.  Chambers is the top ranked freshman in the nation (sixth) with her new personal best of 62.93m at Friday's Mt. SAC Relays.  No other freshman, either true or redshirt, ranks in the top 30.

In addition, Chambers' new personal best also set a new U.S. junior national record.  The record broke Maureen Griffin's 13-year-old record of 61.44m.  As a senior at Kell High School in Marietta, Georgia, Chambers came within one inch of breaking that mark, which is also the high school national record.  Now Chambers not only holds the national junior record, but also has the fourth best junior mark in the world and is in a good position to win a medal at this summer's World Junior Championships in Canada.  If she is successful, she will join Griffin as the only female hammer throwers to ever win a medal in a either a junior or senior international championship.

The CollegeHammer.com Athlete of the Week honor is awarded for the nation's most impressive male or female collegiate hammer throw performance over the past week.
