Amber Campbell won her fourth consecutive USA indoor weight throw title on Saturday with a season's best throw of 24.21m (79-5.25). The throw also improves on her own 2011 world leading mark. Campbell dominated the competition from start to finish. Runner-up Loree Smith improved to 22.11m (72-6.50) in the final round, but still was more than two meters behind Campbell. Smith's throw is her best mark since 2005, when she set the NCAA record in the hammer throw. Third place finisher Kristin Smith, a 2010 Kentucky graduate, threw a personal best of 20.97m. Winner Amber Campbell also sits in first in the rankings for the $30,000 Visa jackpot given to the top overall performance during the Visa Championship Series. She won the award last year and is again the favorite after many top names have withdrawn from the meet.
The men's competition was very close. Jake Freeman won by little more than a foot with a season's bes throw of 24.08m (79-0). Mike Mai entered the finals in second place with a personal best of 23.72m (77-10), but was bumped down a spot in the fourth round when A.G. Kruger passed him by one centimeter. U.S. leader Garland Porter struggled with three fouls and placed fourth. This is Freeman's first U.S. indoor title and it comes on the heels of his first U.S. outdoor title last summer (note: he did place first at the 2009 U.S. indoor championships, but tested positive for marijuana).
