The men's race for the D2 title has been exciting this season. Nine throwers surpassed 20 meters this year. Ryan Loughney (Ashland) was the first over the barrier with a huge personal best of 20.74m (71-4) in December. However, that remained his best during the season as others improved. At the end of February Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri) took the national lead away from Loughney. But Loughney came through in the second round to pass Frizell and win the NCAA title. He then improved in the third round with a new personal best of 21.99m (72-1 3/4). Frizzell improved in the final round to 21.47m (70-5 1/4) and thid place went to GLIAC Field Event athlete of the year Mike Jeffery (Ashland). Loughney's winning mark was just under the winning D1 mark, and Frizzell's second place mark actually exceeded 2nd place at the D1 meet.

Christa Bergmann (Fort Hays State) was the surprise winner on the women's side. Her personal best of 19.47m (63-10 1/2) eclipesed her seed mark by nearly one meter as was the case with runner-up Kelly Ash (Ashland). Ash took the early lead in the first round before being passed by just inches in the fifth round by Bergmann, who barely made the finals. Pre-meet favorite Liz Murphy (Grand Valley State) took third, just barely ahead of teammate Sam Lockhart (Grand Valley State).
