Felisha Johnson wins back-and-forth competition at D1 Champs; Henning repeats
Published by
All the buzz around the women's weight throw competition lived up to expectations when a three woman shoot-out was joined by a fourth thrower. Two-time defending NCAA champion D'Ana McCarty (Louisville) took the early lead in the first round while top challengers Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) and Felish Johnson (Indiana State) had some troubles. McCall fouled her first two attempts while Jonhson only managed 19.54m on her first attempt. Former high school record holder Victoria Flowers (Connecticut) was the biggest surprise, adding more than a meter to her best to take the lead in the second round. Still, the rest of the field was slow to wake up. In the finals, McCall broke 22.20m to move into second, just inches behind the lead. McCarty responded on the next throw by tossing 22.28m to move into first. Johnson improved, but still was in fourth until her next attemp, when she leapfrogged all the competitors with a throw of 22.51m. In the final round, she improved again and set a new person best and facility record of 22.69m (74-05.50). McCall also improved to finish second, with McCarty and Flowers in third and fourth. The remainder of the field sat nearly two meters behind. The men's comeptition was more business as usual. Defending champion Walter Henning (LSU) was the clear favorite entering the competition and met everyone's expectations with another win. He led from start, although his best of 22.16m (72-08.50) was well under his season's best and personal best. Still, he didn't need a better throw as his best was more than enough for the win. Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) improved one spot on his finish from last year with a second place finish. Adonson Shallow (SE Louisiana) had a big surprise personal best last weekend and followed it up with another good throw for third place. Shallow had five fouls, but his one throw was good enough to get him on the podium.
