After opening the season with an impressive personal best, true freshman Justin Welch (Georgia) continues to impress. This past weekend he threw a new best of 67.78 meters. To put the mark in comparison, world junior champion Conor McCullough threw 70.78 meters as a true freshman last season (note: Welch turns 20 in September and is not eligible for junior competitions this year). Chris Cralle (Sam Houston State) also broke 68 meters again, while division 3 thrower Eric Flores (Cal Lutheran) and 2 thrower Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri) both started strong.

On the women's side defending NCAA hammer champion Nicola Lomnicka (Georgia) started her season with a throw of 63.70 meters. Lomnicka had surgery in the off-season and redshirted the indoor season. With this mark though, it seems she is recovering well. The top mark of the weekend came from last year's NCAA runner up Dorotea Habazin (Virginia Tech) with a throw of 65.30 meters. Gwen Berry (Southern Illinois) and Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) both opened their seasons over 62 meters and NCAA indoor champion Felisha Johnson (Indiana State) debuted at 58.78m.
