The first hammer throw performance list features some great early performances. Brad Bolton (El Toro, Lake Forest, CA), the top returner on the boy's side, opened up his season just one foot under his personal best. National record holder Shelby Ashe (St. Pius X, Atlanta, GA) also started the season strong with a throw of 198'2" way back in November. As more athletes begin their seasons in April, expect many more improvements.

Although the 5k hammer throw is not normally contested in the U.S. it is conducted
in some meets. Boys’ 5k performances of 160’ or more in an officially sanctioned
meet will be included in the performance list providing the athlete is 16 or 17
years old through December 31, 2011 (born in 1994 or 1995) in accordance with
IAAF guidelines for Youth Athletes.
