Many of the top athletes faced each other this weekend at the Spec Towns Invitational in Georgia and the Texas Relays in Austin. The Hokies were the top collegiate throwers in Georgia, led by Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech) and Dorotea Habazin (Virginia Tech). Lomnicky had little competition, but Habazin was just under her season best and again beat a top field. In Texas, Chris Cralle (Sam Houston State) won the men's competition over Dimitrios Fylladitakis (UTEP) and Trey Henderson (USC). Walter Henning (LSU) continued his early season struggles and placed fifth. One of the best marks of the weekend came from defending D2 champion Ryan Loughney (Ashland), who added nearly three meters to his personal best with a throw of 69.53m. Amanda Bingson (UNLV) broke 68 meters again for the best mark of the weekend, while Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) and teammate Gwen Berry (Southern Illinois) also produced great throws.

In the professional ranks, Jessica Crosby improved her personal best by one centimeter to 72.22m. She has the top American mark for the season and the eight best mark in the world. On the men's side, Drew Loftin continued his consistent start to the season. He improved his season best to 73.48m. He has thrown over 73 meters in all three meets this year and improved in each competition. His only better throws have been en route to his surprise third place finish at last year's USA Championships.
