Senior Shelby Ashe ( St. Pius X, Atlanta, GA) came close to breaking her national high school record she set last season. She threw 211'01" over the weekend, just four feet under her personal best from last year. The throw was good enough to break her own national senior class record set in April. Prior to this season, the national senior class record was held by Maureen Griffin (Pocatello, ID) when she threw 201'07" back in the early days of women's hammer throw in 1998.

The boy's side was also filled with action over the weekend. Ben Glauser (Athens Academy, Athens, GA) and Nathan Loe (Woodland, Cartersville, GA) became the most recent throwers to break 200 feet this season, bringing the total to eight boys over 200 feet this year. Kevin Conway (Westerly, RI) also improved nearly ten feet to 195'08" and is on the verge of joining the club too.

Ashe’s record performance throw of 64.35m (211’01”) was at the 2011 Armed Forces
Invitational at the Marietta Sixth Grade Academy, Marietta, GA on May 15, 2011.
This broke her national senior class record of 61.68m (202’04”) set in the second
round of this meet, which broke her record of 61.65m (202’03”) set at the 2011
Heavenly Heave at the same venue on April 23, 2011. Her record performance on 
April 23rd broke Maureen Griffin’s (SR/Pocatello, ID) record of 61.44m (201’07”)
set at the Rocky Mountain Elite Open at Utah State University, Logan, UT on
May 30, 1998.

Although the 5k hammer throw is not normally contested in the U.S. it is conducted
in some meets. Boys’ 5k performances of 160’ or more in an officially sanctioned
meet will be included in the performance list providing the athlete is 16 or 17
years old through December 31, 2011 (born in 1994 or 1995) in accordance with
IAAF guidelines for Youth Athletes.
