Lightning was both in the sky and in the ring in Des Moines on Thursday. Inclimiate weather delayed much of the competition at the NCAA Championships, but did not prevent a great hammer throw competition. As expected, 2009 NCAA Champion Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech) jumped into the lead in the second round after fouling his first attempt. He held that lead until the end of the competition, when his teammate and the number two seed Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) improved to pass Lomnicky by a foot. Lomnicky was did not improve on his final attempt, giving Ziegler the win after placing second at last year's competition.
Defending champion Walter Henning (LSU) placed third, just a few inches under his season's best. Trey Henderson (USC) moved from seventh place to fourth on his final attempt as the, less than a foot ahead of Alec Faldermeyer (UCLA) and Mike Lauro (LSU). Faldermeyer was also the top freshman at the meet.
