The SIU Saluki Open at Southern Illinois University was the epicenter of weight throwing this past weekend. The meet produced a new collegiate leader for men and women, plus a world leading women's mark. Seniors Jeneva McCall and JC Lambert both threw personal bests to take the collegiate lead. Lambert's best of 22.66m added more than a meter to his personal best from last year. As Jesse Squire points out, his mark is the eight best ever among US collegians. McCall, the NCAA runner up both indoors and outdoors in 2011, also added more than a meter to her personal best. Her new best of 23.76m is the fourth best ever by a collegian.
The women's collegiate and world record holder Brittany Riley was also on hand at the competition. Riley retired after competing in the 2008 Olympics and this weekend's competition was her first meet since then. She did not show much rust. Her throw of 25.12m was just more than a foot off of her personal best and her third best result ever. Only she has ever thrown further than 25 meters.
Elsewhere, post-collegiates Mike Mai and Garland Porter also started their seasons with marks over 22 meters.
