D1 Indoor Nationals: Favorites McCall and Lomnicky capture titles
Published by
So far this season Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) had yet to lose to another collegiate competitor. In fact, no one had even come close and on Friday she continued that dominance with a throw of 22.90 meters to win the NCAA title. McCall's first three throws were all good enough to win by several feet. After a fourth round foul, she still had secured the win and passed her final attempts. Ida Storm (UCLA) threw a good personal best for second place, but her best of 21.48m was still nearly five feet behind McCall. Brittany Smith (Illinoi State) took third and defending champion Felish Johnson (Indiana State) placed fourth. Top seeded Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech) broke 22 meters twice to win the NCAA title on Saturday morning. The former NCAA outdoor champion now has an indoor title to add to his collection. J.C. Lambert (Southern Illinois) came within inches of the win on his final attempt, but wasn't able to finish the weight throw sweep for the Salukis. Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) brought home another podium finish for Virginia Tech with his third place finish. While there were many amazing performances, the overall results were not as deep as expected. All 16 men had broken 21 meters this season, but only six managed to do so during the competition. On the women's side, 10 women had broken 21 meters earlier this season, but only two managed to do so at the meet. In fact, the lowest seeded woman had throw 20.76m entering the meet and only three women broke that barrier at the meet. It once again shows that these championships are often wide open and those athletes that peak at the right time can overcome even the lowest seed.
