NCAA Championships: D2 Hammer Throw Preview
Published by
This has been one of the deepest years in the history of NCAA Division II. On the men's side, you have two guys over 66 meters, another two over 65 meters and another five over 60 meters. It was just back in 2005 that only one thrower broke 200-feet at the NCAA Championships and only two throwers surpassed that barrier in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Five throwers broke the mark at last year's meet and most of them are returning to make this year's meet even better. Defending champion Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri) leads the way. His season best of 66.87m is only one centimenet short of his winning throw at least year's meet. Meanwhile, his closest competitors have all improved. Jason Stomps (Hillsdale) has thrown of 66-meters and Ryan Loughney (Ashland) and Brian Allen (Pittsburg State) both sit over 65 meters. Loughney and Allen placed second and fifth respecitvely at least year's meet while Stomps was the 2010 NCAA indoor champion. No clear favorite has emerged among the group. Frizzell has yet to face many of the other throwers, and the rest have all traded wins. In fact, Stomps' teammate Aaron Falk (Hillsdale) has recorded a number of wins against him and coupld be the potential dark horse. Defending women's champion Danielle Thu (UC San Diego) compete unattached this year and will not be there to defendher title. The competition looks like it will be a close competition between 2009 runner-up Amanda Madden (Northern State) and freshman Liz Murphy (Grand Valley State). Murphy has the best mark in the nation this season and place third indoors, but Madden was the indoor champion and threw a personal best last weekend to show that she may be peaking at the right time. Eight more throwers are entered over 55 meters and should make this a close competition for every position.
