CollegeHammer.com Outdoor Rankings Vol. 5

Men: Many of the top throwers have yet to face off this year. None of the top three throwers have faced each other during the outdoor season, but that is about to change as at the NCAA Regional Championships today. THe top five throwers in the rankings will all throw against each other in North Carolina. Granted, they will just be aiming for a top 12 finish and aren't likely to throw personal bests after sitting through 47 other throwers, but it will still be a gauge of how they stack up against each other.

In this week's rankings, Steffen Nerdal (Memphis) moves up one spot with his personal best of 72.04m at last weekend's Tucson Elite meet. Nerdal is always one that competes well, and with his new best he showed can be right in the mix in Eugene next month. Conor McCullough (Princeton) also moved up another spot after breaking his own national junior record and Dylan Armstrong's North American junior record at the IC4A Championships. As predicted, Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) is recovering from his injury and returning to form, but it may not be soon enough and he slipped a few spots as a result.

Rank Name School SB (PB) Previous
 1  Marcel Lomnicky  Virginia Tech  74.83m  1
 2  Walter Henning  LSU  72.98m  2
 3  Steffen Nerdal  Memphis  72.04m  4
 4  Conor McCullough  Princeton  70.78m  5
 5  Alexander Ziegler  Virginia Tech  68.83m (72.46m)  3
 6  Trey Henderson  Virginia Tech  67.63m  6
 7  James Rogan  Idaho  67.55m  7
 8  Branislav Danis  Georgia  68.25m (69.20)  -

Dropped from rankings: Dimitrios Fylladitakis (UTEP) (8).

On the bubble (in alphabetical order): John Freeman (Georgia); Dimitrios Fylladitakis (UTEP); and Brad Millar (DePaul).

Women: Inconsistency has been the theme of most of the top women this year. Nikola Lomnicka (Georgia) retains the top spot because she has shown she can throw over 63 meters on every weekend. While she hasn't had the top marks over the past few weekends, I believe her consistency will show when it counts at the NCAA Championships. After throwing a PR last week Dorotea Habazin (Virginia Tech) moves up to the second spot. Behind her the field continues to shift, showing that All-American honors are truly up for grabs this year. The biggest drop was by Lauren Chambers (USC) after she placed second at the Pac-10 Championships.

Rank Name School SB (PB) Previous
 1  Nikola Lomnicka  Georgia  66.07m  1
 2  Dorotea Habazin  Virginia Tech  66.74m  4
 3  Kristin Smith  Kentucky  63.57m (63.75m)  2
4  Jeneva McCall  Southern Illinois  63.37m  8 (tie)
 5  Gwen Berry  Southern Illinois  62.26m  5
 6  Alena Krechyk  Kansas  64.57m (68.61m)  6
 7  Amanda Bingson  UNLV  64.07m  -
 8  Jere' Summers  Louisville  63.20m  8 (tie)

Dropped from rankings: Lauren Chambers (USC) (3); and Sarah Grimm (Utah) (7).

On the bubble (in alphabetical order): Lauren Chambers (USC); Jaynie Goodbody (Stanford); Sarah Grimm (Utah); and Sasha Leeth (Southern Illinois).

The CollegeHammer.com rankings are subjective and take into account the following factors: head-to-head record versus top rivals, season's best, previous big meet performances (i.e. peaking ability), recent performances, consistency, personal best, as well as other factors.
