An action packed day in Germany ended with a world record by crowd favorite Betty Heidler. The annual Hallesche Werfertage meeting in Halle, Germany always brings together the world's best throwers and today was no exception. Below is a summary of the results in the elite competitions. See the link below for results in the youth, junior, and under 23 divisions.

Hammer Throw - Heidler stole the show with her third round best of 79.42m, which broke the world record by 1.12 meters. All of her attempts were over 75 meters. The previou record was set last by Poland Anita Wlodarczyk in last June. Wlodarczyk set her first world record en route to besting Heidler in front of another home crowd at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. Wlodarczyk has yet to begin her 2011 season, so it will be interesting to see if she can respond. Behind Heidler on Saturday was former world leader Kathrin Klaas (73.77m) and Olympic bronze Medalist Zhang Wenxiu. The men's competition was won by Markus Esser with a 78.50m throw in the final round over 2010 European Champion Libor Charfreitag of Slovakia.

Discus Throw - Berlin native Robert Harting dominated the competition with a very consistent series of throws and a new world leading mark of 68.99m. His worst attempt still measured 67.17m. Young German Martin Wierig improved his personal best to 67.21m for second, and Australia's Benn Harradine was just under his national record for third with 66.07m. The women's competition was close and won by Li Yanfeng of China with 66.18m. Nadine Müller of Germany took second with 66.05m. Those marks rank second and third in the world in 2011.

Shot Put - Dylan Amrstrong continued his undefeated season with another dominant win over European indoor champion Ralf Bartels of Germany. The Canadian's best throw was 21.54m and he now has three of the five furthest throws in 2011. The women's shot put was won by 2004 Olympic silver medalist and 2009 World Championship runner-up Nadine Kleinert with a throw of 19.16m.

Javelin - Christina Obergföll moved from second place to first in the final round to beat fellow German Katharina Molitor. Obergföll finished at 64.53m, currently second in the world and less than a meter behind the world lead. Molitor's best of 63.58m is the fourth best in the world this season. The men's field had a stellar line up, but little action until the final two rounds. In the fith round, Chen Qi of China became first to break 80 meters, and Till Wöschler of Germany improved even more to 80.81m and then 80.93m in the final round for the win. Young German Mathias de Zordo ended up beating Qi for second place with a throw of 80.77m in the final round.
