Junior Ryan Loughney (Ashland) broke the Division II National Championships meet record on Thursday with a first round attempt of 68.04m. He then improved to 70.15m in the second round and had two more attempts over the old meet record, leading the competition from start to finish over Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri). The throw was also a personal best and Loughney's first time ever over 70 meters. Frizzell finished second with 67.02m, and four mor atheltes broke 200 feet.

On the women's side, sophomore Liz Murphy (Grand Valley State) also led the competition from start to finish with a first round best of 59.11m. Murphy entered the competition ranked first, just barely ahead of Danielle Thu (UC San Diego) on the performance lists. However, Thu struggled and placed fourth. Runner-up honors went to Jessice Horsley (Chadron State).
