Flores and Ozanich defend titles at D3 Championships
Published by
Despite a rain-filled circle and poor weather, Eric Flores (Cal Luthern) successfully defended his NCAA Division III national title on Thursday at Ohio Wesleyan University. Flores was little more than a meter off of his NCAA Championship record and led from start to finish, but that didn't mean it was an easy win. Bryan Kolacz (Keene State), the 2009 champion and 2010 bronze medalist, threw a big personal best in the second round to move within a few feet of Flores. However, Kolacz fouled his final attempts, allowing Flores to hang on for the win. Taylor Berilant (Claremond-Mudd-Scripps), last year's runner up, took third place with a season's best throw. The women's competition on Friday morning were also quite close. Defending champion Holly Ozanich (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) had all five of her legal throws over her old personal best and led by less than two feet heading into the fifth round. Then her teammate and top seeded thrower Sue Trzebiatowski (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) also threw a personal best to move within inches. Ozanich responded by extending her lead and breaking 200 feet for the first time ever with a throw of 60.95m (200-0). She held on for the win, Trzebiatowski took second, and Amanda Brichacek (Nebraska Wesleyan) took third. Ozanich's new best is also ranks her as the second best Division III thrower of all-time.
