The Division I NCAA Championship Preliminary Round (a/k/a Regionals) took place weekend and all of the favorites moved onto the finals. The top 12 finishers in each region moved onto the national finals which will take place in two weeks in Des Moines, Iowa.

There were few surprises over the weekend and all of the top men qualified for the next round. Oliver Whaley (BYU) was the only athlete ranked in the top 15 that did not make the cut. Most of the surprise finishers were at the bottom of the qualifier list. The West Region was also troubled by bad weather, meaning the winning distances were much lower than most people's best results from this year. Chris Cralle (Sam Houston State) ended up winning with a throw of 66.67m, while most of the top throwers simply passed their final attempts ocne it was clear they had qualfieid for the next round. Over in the East region, national leader Marcel Lomincy (Virginia Tech) easily won with a throw of 73.91m, while his teammate Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) also broke 70 meters. Defending NCAA champion Walter Henning (LSU) also improved his season's best to 69.09m.
