Results for the Weekend of 1/30/10

Walter Henning (LSU) jumped into the national lead this week with a new personal best of 23.06m (75-08.00) to win on a fast ring at the University of New Mexico. On his blog this week, Henning revealed that his season opening mark of last week was actually with a heavy 38-pound weight. With the lighter 35-pound weight, Henning showed that he is in great form and ready to challenge for the national title this season. Defending NCAA champion Jason Lewis (Arizona State) was the last front runner to open his season, but he did so this weekend at Northern Arizona University. Despite being about a meter off of his personal best, Lewis threw significantly further than he did at the same meet last year, when he only threw 21.17m. Steffen Nerdal (Memphis) also hit another 22-meter throw over the weekend and Mike Zajac (South Carolina) broke 21-meters for the first time. This was also a great weekend for D2 throwers, with seven throwers breaking 19-meters and a new season's best of 20.59m by defending champion Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri). On the women's side, Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) had the top mark of the weekend for the second straight week. She topped an impressive field with four throwers breaking 20-meters at Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial. Jacob Freeman and Amber Campbell led the post collegiate throwers with wins at the Millrose Games.
