NCAA Regional Qualifiers Announced
Published by
The fields for the NCAA Division I Regionals were announced on Friday. In the past, there were four regions where athletes competed for both automatic and at large bids. This year will be the first (and perhaps last) using a new system with just two regional competitions next weekend. In this new format, the top twelve finishers and relay teams from the West Regional in Austin and the East Regionals in Greensboro, North Carolina, will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene June 9-12. The top 48 athletes in each qualified to take part in the preliminary round, which should make for a long weekend of competition. On the Women's side, the regions are fairly even. While the two top throwers are in the East region, the 12th seed is nearly identical (59.43m in the east versus 59.07m in the west). It also took only two more feet to place in the top 48 in the East region and thus qualify for the regional championship. The men's side was a bit more lopsided. The East region features five of the top six throwers in the country. It also has the depth to match. Twelth place in the East region is nearly a meter ahead of the twelth qualified in the West (64.19 versus 63.23m). The last qualifier in the East (58.65m) was also well ahead of the last West qualified (56.30m). You can find all of the entries below. Check back next weekend for pre-meet and post-meet coverage, including a preview of the competition, weeekly national rankings, results, athlete of the week honors, and commentary.
