The new year has not yet begun, but once again the new season has quietly started already. And there are already some great marks. Senior Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) added a half meter to her PR in her first meet with a throw of 23.02m. Last year McCall had a stellar season that featured runner-up finishes at the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships and a 15th place finish at the World Championships. Benia Gregoire (Florida International) and Brittany Smith (Illinois State) also had big breakthroughs.

The D2 men have led the way so far. Defending NCAA D2 Champion Ryan Loughney (Ashland) added a few centimeters to his personal best with a throw of 22.08m. Richard Quick (Ashland) and Ross Bunchek (Wayne State) also broke 20 meters. There will be a few more competitions this month, but many of the top D1 men are expected to start their seasons in January.
