CollegeHammer.com Athlete of the Week: Kristin Smith
Published by
Kentucky senior Kristin Smith entered the season with a personal best of just 18.88m (61-11.50). That immediately changed at her first meet on January 15th, where she blasted a new personal best, school record, and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 19.55m (64-01.75). But the success didn't stop there. This week Smith improved her personal best by another meter to 20.51m (67-03.50) to place second in a deep Rod McCravy Memorial Meet featuring six provisional qualifying marks and four throwers over 20 meters. She now has the fourth furthest mark in the NCAA. That impressive new best earns Smith the honor of being this week's CollegeHammer.com Athlete of the Week. Others considered: Walter Henning (LSU) improved his personal best by a foot and moved into the national lead. Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) was off of her personal best this week, but beat the field in the toughest meet so far this year, including Kristin Smith. Mike Zajac (South Carolina) also had a good personal best over the weekend. The CollegeHammer.com Athlete of the Week honor is awarded for the nation's most impressive male or female weight throw performance over the past week. Previous winners: Jan 25 - Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech); Jan 18 - Jeneva McCall (Louisville) CollegeHammer.com is a published by the non-profit Evergreen Athletic Fund and edited by Martin Bingisser.
