CollegeHammer.com Indoor Rankings Vol. 1
Published by
So far this season, few of the top throwers have faced each other head to head. That is about to change as February brings us some of the first big invitationals (like this weekend's New Balance Collegiate Invitational) and conference championships. Now that all of the top throwers have opened their season, we figured it is also time to start up the CollegeHammer.com Rankings again. The CollegeHammer.com Rankings are a weekly projection of the order of finish at March's Division I Indoor Championships. The rankings are subjective and take into account the following factors: head-to-head record versus top rivals, season's best, previous big meet performances (i.e. peaking ability), recent performances, consistency, personal best, as well as other factors. With that in mind, here we go... CollegeHammer.com NCAA Division I Weight Throw RankingsVolume One - 4 February 2010 Men: The men's competition is too close to call. While Walter Henning (LSU) is coming off of an impressive weekend where he took the national lead, he still is less than a foot ahead of Steffen Nerdal (Memphis). Because Nerdal has a tendency to throw PRs at the NCAA Championships, we give him the edge for now. Henning will have plenty of chances to prove himself before the big dance since the SEC has four throwers in the top eight. Returning champion Jason Lewis (Arizona State) is also in the mix and tends to heat up later in the season.
On the bubble (in alphabetical order): Brad Millar (DePaul). Women: Defending champion D'Ana McCarty (Louisville) lost early in the season to teammate Jere' Summers (Louisville), but bounced right back with a near-PR to show that when she is at her best, few can match her this year. Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) had a hot January and leads the three Saluki women that made the list.
On the bubble (in alphabetical order): Irene Cooper (Western Michigan); Kelsey Hanley (Indiana State). CollegeHammer.com is a published by the non-profit Evergreen Athletic Fund and edited by Martin Bingisser. Please consider donating to help support the site.
