Junior Trey Henderson (USC) has been more consistent than ever this year. After leaving the USC football team to focus on track last year, his results have shot up. He improved by nearly five meters last year, but strugged at the end of the season and placed just 21st at the NCAA Championships. This year, he came out shooting and already improved another three meters. He threw a best of 66.97m in March, then improved to 67.05m in April (which was the top collegiate finisher at the Mt. SAC Relays), and again improved last weekend to 67.63m. His throw gave USC the early lead in the USC/UCLA dual meet and the team held on to sweep UCLA on the road for the first time in the long history of the meet. Henderson now has the seventh best mark in the nation and looks in shape to improve even more.

The outdoor season is still young, but Utah senior Sarah Grimm has already improved her personal best by almost ten feet. Grimm entered the year with a best of 60.65 meters from last season, but has so far been undefeated in five competitions this year and has improver her personal best twice in two weeks. Just a few days ago set her new best of 63.14m (207-02), which was the best mark in the NCAA over the weekend and earned her conference athlete of the week honors. Grimm qualified for the NCAA Championships last season, but missed the finals by one spot and less than a foot. With the fifth best mark in the NCAA this year, expect her to be right in the mix this year.

Others considered: Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech) threw over 71 meters and had the best mark in the nationa again over the weekend. James Rogan (Idaho) has been very consistent this season and tossed a new personal best over the weekend. Kristin Smith (Kentucky) beat out a strong field and nearly threw a personal best to win the Jesse Owens Track Classic and produce the top women's mark of the weekend.

The CollegeHammer.com Athlete of the Week honor is awarded for the nation's most impressive male or female collegiate hammer throw performance over the past week. Previous winners: Apr 26 - Sarah Grimm (Utah); Apr 19 - Lauren Chambers (USC).
