NCAA Championships: D2 Weight Throw Preview
Published by
MEN: The Division II men have had perhaps the deepest year in history. Two throwers enter this year's NCAA Championships over 21 meters and six eneter over twenty meters. It took 19 meters just to qualify for the meet, something unheard of several years ago. The favorite entering the meet is Jason Stomps (Hillside). Stomps started off the season slow, with a few of his first meets under 20 meters and losses to Aaron Falk (Hillsdale) and Mike Jeffery (Ashland). However, three of his last four meets have been over 21 meters and he now seems to have found consistency. Stomps' toughest competition might come from his teammate. Aaron Falk is the only other thrower to break 21 meters this year and has bettered Stomps in two competitions, most recently on February 19th. Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri) is undefeated against Division II competition this year, has won five of his six competitions and has consistently thrown near 21 meters. He will also challenge for the title. Brian Allen (Pittsburg State) and Mike Jeffery could also pull an upset. As the two-time defending NCAA Division II champion, she was the clear favorite. However, after two seasons of throwing right at 20 meters, she barely made it over 19 meters this year and finds herself in a tough battle with freshman Liz Murphy (Grand Valley State). Murphy is coming into the meet after winning the GLIAC Championships with a nation leading mark. While the two throwers have yet to face each other this year, Cooper enters the meet with a slight advantage since Murphy has only thrown over 19 meters once in her career while Cooper has done so twice this season and a dozen times in her career. Behind Cooper and Murphy the field is very tight. The next six throwers are all within 18 inches of each other and it it could be anyone's game for third place. It also wouldn't be a stretch for someone else to upset Cooper and Murphy since they have been less than consistent.
