Weekend Results for 3/05/10
Published by
This weekend was the last chance for athletes to qualify for next week's NCAA Championships. Some results have come in, but a few meets have yet to finish. Most of the action was on the men's side. Only one woman, Stacy Wannemacher (Purdue) improved her chances of making the NCAA Championships. However, four of the men on the bubble improved. Branislav Danis (Georgia) had the biggest improvement, jumping from 22nd to 8th position. J.C. Lambert (Southern Illinois) also secured himself a spot as did John Freeman (Georgia). Michael Lauro (LSU) also improved, but moved down the rankings as others passed him. He now sits in 15th. Last year the NCAA meet only accepted 14 entrants, but 17 athletes were invited in 2008. Athletes that improved their best over the weekend are noted with a "+" sign after their result. The official list of accepted entries will be announced on Monday. In addition to the last chance meets, the NAIA championships also took place over the weekend. The men's competition featured some great action. Joel Leong (Cornerstone) and James Refenes (Concordia, Neb.) dueled it out. Refenes led the competition with a personal best entering the sixth round. However, Joel Leong also threw a personal best on his last attempt to take the lead and win the title. Denise Mattoon (Oklahoma Christian) won the women's title.
